Do you have a website (not attached to DA)? I'd love to see it!

Well, I've been pretty absent on DA for a while now, just to due to life and everything.  I'm going to try to get back into the swing of things but there was no way I could possibly go through all the thousands of messages accumulated while I was gone.  It was even sort of overwhelming me enough to make me avoid DA all together.

So I just deleted them all.

However, feel free to reply here and demand comment/critique from me. Point out some cool new artist that you've found while I was gone, interesting journals, contests, whatever.  I'm so out of the loop!  Fill me in on what I've missed!

Hugs for all!

i hope you all had a wonderful holiday.  i myself had a great time out east with john's family. i posted a few photos on my flickr account so you can look at them by clicking here.  on friday we went and saw night at the museum and had a great dinner.  saturday was the christmas party at his mom's house.  we put up and decorated the christmas tree and ate some delicious dinner.  i met his mom's side of the family and they were all very nice.  we opened the stockings and then everyone decided it was time to leave.  i was amused.  on sunday john and i drove up to new york city for a nice day trip.  the weather was awesome and it was a great yet long day.  i couldn't believe how crowded it was down there on christmas eve.

on sunday john and i flew home to so that we could be with my family for christmas as well. yay more good food and family.  i'm really glad i was able to be home on christmas.  it was weird missing out on preparing christmas dinner and everything since i was out of town.  i'm glad we were able to be with both our families during the holidays. and i'm really happy john is living here now. couldn't ask for a better christmas gift.

in other news, i'm extremely behind on deviantART messages and i don't know when that will change.  i hope you are all doing well and thanks for all the favs and watches.

So, it's been a really long time since I've updated and quite a bit has happened.  Working at Threadless was pretty sweet.  It'd be nice to help them out again in a month or two when they're hiring temps again to help with their Christmas sale.  Really though I should find something more perminent before then.  Eww. Real job. Not ready.

On the 7th I left to visit my love, John and his family in Rhode Island.  I had intended on staying just over a week but ended up staying almost 2.5 weeks.  It was so great we all got along great and his family really seems to like me and thats wonderful too.  I was so nervous they wouldn't.  I got to see all the places he hung out at growing up and experience candlepin bowling and go to flea markets and visit Boston.  It was a great time.  Yay, happiness.

So I've really been knitting a lot still....recently made some slippers....well I still need to find buttons and finish making the right slipper but they're very adorable and I like them a lot.  May post photos of them here eventually.

Camera Talk
:bulletred: Ansco Shur Shot -- Picked it up at a flea market on the trip..it's pretty old and it's a 6x9 format, so I'm looking forward to seeing if it works.
:bulletred: Quad Cam -- John bought it for me while I was out there.  It's silly and fun and I have a few ideas for it if it depending on how the test roll turns out.  Link in case you have no idea what I'm talking about.
:bulletred: Agfa Isola -- bought it on eBay -- should be arriving soon and it looks promising.

A big THANK YOU to ssecret  for suggesting me for a DD.  I was so surprised go give him some love on his page! Thank you all for the support it really means a lot to me!

Seems my subsciption has expired and thats quite unfortunate as I have so many deviations to catch up on and now I don't have thumbnails in the DeviantWATCH area.  Also seems I don't have my footer with the communitis I'm in...boo that!  I'll have to retype that later.

I hope you're all doing well, and I'm sorry I've been so inactive here lately but that should change as I'm home again.

thoughts on new DA

Wed Aug 9, 2006, 12:08 AM
So.  I'm really not a fan of this new DA.  I really didn't want to vent on DA because they must have put a lot of work into it and I applaud them, but it makes me unhappy - and I can't sleep - so I feel like venting...

I think its ugly and templateish.   :puke:  It's all so round and curvy as templates seem to be.  I just wish it was something more original and defined and professional looking.

The main page scares me a lot.  The brightness of it does not make viewing the images easy on the eyes.  Not digging those "notices" *coughadvertisements* I'm a paid member, I wish to not be forced to see stuff like that.

Onto the today page.  Community Mood? What? Why? I've only seen things like that on blogging sites.  Which I did not think was the main focus of this site.  But you know, let me add a bitter/unhappy mood to the bar graph with this post.  Popular Journals  & Popular Deviants -- clearly they need more attention.  I think I will visit that page, NEVER.

I miss knowing what kind of messages I have, be it a note of poll or forum comment.  It was a really handy tool that I'm uncertain as to why they removed.  I also don't understand why links are the same color as normal text, please change the color.  Simple thing I hope they fix.  I also miss not seeing the dates the deviations were uploaded when you're visiting a users page.  I really only depend on that when looking for people to feature - seeing as I generally want to feature people who still frequent the site.  I miss being able to roll over the thumbs in people's favorites and seeing how long ago it was posted, even that was helpful but is gone as well.  I also miss dates in the shoutbox.

I don't like showing 4 small thumbs of my recent deviations.  They're so small and floating in a huge area and it looks awkward.  I don't like that you can only view scraps from the profile page rather than gallery page.  I miss not knowing whether someone has a DD or not (generally I don't want to feature people who have 4 DD's (Staff Picks) already).  If there is a way to figure that out without going through their entire gallery/or opening their most popular deviation please tell me for I have not figured it out yet...Confusing site :shakefist:

There are some things I like, such as the nested comments on your profile page.  The navigation is kinda nifty but I don't see myself using it often.   But yeah...that definitely doesn't outweigh the grand list above that is giving me a headache.

/end rant

summer update

Sat Aug 5, 2006, 6:26 PM
much to update about.  i should be picking up my diana film i shot in san francisco early next week.  however, the digital lab is closed until september so i'm not sure when i'll have anything to put up on here.  unless i scan some traditional prints i make on the crappy scanner at home.

while i was on vacation i won 3rd place in the symmetrical photography contest with perpetual view. :w00t: i was so surprised.  so i won an extra one month sub which is awesome and a prints account that i will most likely never used.  but it's nice to have just in case, i guess.  hopefully i get a job before my sub runs out, im not sure i can handle a regular account anymore, heh.

i also started as one of the photo staff at DailyDeviants right after i got back from my trip.  it's been really great so far.  i'm really glad to be a part of the group and be able to support so many artists.

my birthday was on tuesday and it was one of the best birthdays ive had since i can remember.  relaxing at the beach with my friends.  honestly, theres not much better.  it was incredibly hot that day and the water was incredibly freezing.  it was a constant cycle of rotating in and out of the water.  dinner at a cute little italian restaurant concluded the evening.  it was so delicious after spending the whole day in the sun. yum.  yay for being another year older :fear:

i'm heading out to rhode island for a couple days in september, quite excited.  it will be a lot of fun.  i really need to find a job before then.  time to grow up and get a real job.  ew.

well, my trip was amazing.  the weather was beautiful, and i took a lot of fun photographs (i think).  i shot about 300 pics with the 30D i bought the day before i left.  and i shot about 10 rolls with my diana.  i have yet to even see what my photos look like on screen as im a digital noob still and i dont know what im doing...anyway...on with the inkblot results!

inkblot by Invisible-Elephant :thumb35944502: Inkblot.004 by eiknop clicky.

Thank you ginger-tears, greykonos, Invisible-Elephant, & ssecret for your participation!
so, inkblots are lacking entries so im extending the deadline again -- mainly because im in san francisco now on vacation and it's easier for me to just wait till i get home to do the official update with all the inkblots i got turned it.  the weather is amazing here, i had to put on a jacked last night.  sure beats the 90+ degree weather back home!

i'm afraid to see what my messages will look like when i get home on the 23rd (but you should all send me lovely messages anyway).

well its official.  there's a small group of people interested in participating in this project so im just going to go ahead with it.

your task, should you choose to accept it is to create an inkblot resembling a spider.  and noting it to me by sunday, july 9th.  just because it's called an inkblot doesn't mean it necessarily has to be created with ink.  there are other options such as paints, and things that will also work with a little experimenting.

my inkblots are all made by placing a little ink on a thick paper and folding it in half.  the paper usually dries a little wavy so i have to fuddle around with photoshop a little bit to clean it up a little, because they dont scan well.  if thats something you need help with feel free to send me a note with it and i can help you there.

when you post your spider blot on da (either in your scraps or gallery) please mention that it is part of this project and link to this journal so that maybe more people will participate.  then, send me (eiknop) a note with a link to your blot.  i will put together a journal after the deadline so that we can view them all together.  if you do not send me a note i will not know that you've made one and it wont be included in the project.

remember the deadline is sunday, july 9th! so you have just over a week.  i look forward to seeing what you all come up with!

if you have any questions feel free to ask them here so that i dont get a lot of repeat questions.

to help spread the word on this project please tell your friends or mention it in one of your journals, linking to mine or something.

thank you, ponky

EDIT:Deadline has been exctended to Friday, July 14th.  I do hope more of you will participate, please tell your friends!
so, some of you may have noticed that my latest deviation what an inkblot.  and i was curious to see how many of you would be interested in participating in a little project were we all try to make an inkblot that looks like a certain animal/object.  and then we can compair them all.  now, i normally use india ink to make mine, but you can use things like finger paints as well (or anything else you can think of to smush) to make yours.  i've actually been meaning to try some finger paints myself to see the different effects you get if using more than one color and whatnot.

anyway -- i'm trying to form a list of people who would participate and see if theres enough interest to try this.  it'd require you to spend a little money for supplies if you didnt' have them already.  so let me know if you're at all interested.

i look forward to hearing from you :excited:

[06.16.2006] a day to remember
let today be remembered as the day i sold my first photograph, well it ended up being two!  $400 i was definitely not expecting -- but quite a help towards getting the 20D!!
14x18, traditional c-prints of Confined Spaces I & Confined Spaces III. :w00t:

also, don't forget about the train project!! details below! tomorrow is the day!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[06.15.2006] DA photo project
nu-tones, Vitoldus, didjerama, dotmlk, PukeChrist and myself are announcing a small project and want YOU to join!

We will all photograph a train station on Saturday. If you have a camera, a train staion nearby and a little free time, join us. We want to gather as much as posible.

It doesn't matter what format/colors/idea/main subject.

The is not a contest, it is only for fun, and to see to difrence and resemblence between train stations all over the world, taken in the same day, and the diffrent ideas each of you have.

If you took a picture just upload it to your gallery and then send nu-tones a note with the link.

We would also apriciate if you would tell your freinds on DA about this, the more people the better :)

The picture must be taken on the 17th of June - this Saturday

[06.02.2006] long term goal
i realized what i want to do, my long term goal.

i had a sort of emotional night so i went outside and sat in the hammock chair in complete silence for over an hour -- i just had to get away for a little while. i starred at the stars and the moon. and i just sat there. just reflecting on everything.

i want to open up a little shop. i want to sell things that i make. knitted things, handmade books, etc...whatever other crafty things i pick up along the way. and maybe some photo realated things as well. thats what i want to do. whats what will make me happy. maybe pair up with some other crafty people and sell things together. i know theres not much of an audience for such items as knitted socks but i want to at least try.

im writing it here so i never forget, and so people will hold me accountable, because thats something i need -- constant reminder.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[05.19.2006] it's finally summer
i'm going to give this whole deviantART thing another try.
i've recently graduated college  (someone please hire me) and i'm loosing the critique base i had during my 4 years at columbia college chicago.  being done with school and currently being unemployed i should have plenty of time to tool around on this site.  i look forward to seeing lots of great work and maybe making some new friends. :excited:

this summer i'm looking foward to:
:bulletpurple: laying in the park watching the clouds go by
     :bulletpurple: garage sales
     :bulletpurple: finding a bike/bikeriding
:bulletpurple: going to the drive-in with my friends
:bulletpurple: reading house of leaves by mark z. danielewski
     :bulletpurple: knitting my first afgan!
:bulletpurple: shooting a lot with my diana camera.
:bulletpurple: get my website up and running (but making it would be a good place to start first)

*list subject to be changed/added to!

happy summer everyone, be safe!
